Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Esztergom

2025-05-21

On the commission from the Municipality of Esztergom, Mobilissimus has prepared a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) for the city and its surroundings, which sets out the directions for transport development over a 30-year period. The aim of the plan is to develop a safe, clean and accessible transport system for all, using the European Union's SUMP methodology.

The city has seen several positive developments in recent years. The reconstruction of the Budapest-Esztergom railway line creates a fast and competitive connection to the capital. An intermodal hub and P+R car park have been created at the railway station, and a new free car park has been built in the vicinity of the city centre. Cycling infrastructure has been improved, including the connection between Esztergom-Kertváros and the city centre, and new roundabouts help to improve road safety. A new passenger-friendly network and timetable has been developed by integrating local and interurban bus services, also with the active support of Mobilissimus.

However, the situation analysis also identified a number of challenges. The number of parking spaces in the city centre cannot keep pace with the growth in car use. The cycle network is lacking, especially on the right bank of EuroVelo 6. The main roads through the historic city centre, including Highway 11, cause significant traffic and environmental pressure. The pace of road and pavement renewal is struggling to keep pace with the demands of use, and several pedestrian crossings need to be reviewed for safety.

In addition to good rail access to the capital, it would be important to improve the Almásfüzitői railway line serving the city area. The city's lack of access to the motorway network could be addressed by the M100 motorway, which is on the table at the time of preparation of the plan.

The plan was based on extensive partnership consultations, supported by public questionnaires and professional forums. Proposed measures include expanding the downtown pedestrian-bicycle zone, creating new bicycle lanes and safe pedestrian connections, improving regional and local public transport, and building road links to relieve congestion in the city. The projects in the document have been prioritised and scheduled through a multi-point assessment, supported by a system of indicators and monitoring.
